Wildfires are a necessary aspect of forest ecology, an occurrence that benefits the forest in the long term. Fires of this magnitude, however, affect more than the forest. In a community that relies on tourism and outdoor recreation, the economic impacts are tremendous.

The ongoing fires affecting the Ely area impact far more than the forests. Local small businesses including outfitters, restaurants, services (including Art With a Point), museums, retail, entertainment and outdoor and wildlife education non profits are all feeling the effects of canceled trips, fewer visitors, interrupted operations – and as such, lost income.
